The Stepsister Scheme (Princess Series #1) by Jim C. Hines

Cinderella, (Danielle) has her Happily Ever After. She’s married to her prince, Armand, she lives in the palace. Everything seems wonderful.

But the stepsisters haven’t give up and gone away just because Danielle made it down the aisle with her prince. And after an aborted assassination attempt on Danielle, Armand has gone missing and the sisters are clearly implicated.

Thankfully, Danielle is not without resources – especially since her new mother-in-law, Queen Beatrice has been collecting extraordinary young women with amazing talents to help find her lost son Danielle doesn’t step out alone – but with the lethally skilled Talia (Sleeping Beauty) and the magically gifted Snow (Snow White). Even though it takes them to the depths of fairy land, they will find her Prince

There’s something so delightfully fun about retelling fairy tales that we all know so very well. Especially taking the often passive princesses and re-writing the story to make them the saviour and the Prince the one in peril for once. I love the application of cynical realism to these fairy tales – especially how the Happily Ever After could never ever be that neat. How could Cinderella so quickly transition from being a servant to being a princess? How can Sleeping Beauty go to sleep for a hundred years and not expect her kingdom to have been taken over and her legend be exploited and controlled? That her throne would just be waiting for her when she woke up? And could Snow White really kill her mother who has been Queen for how long and expect to step into her shoes without any political support or allies? Things are not nearly as neat as fairy tales require them to be. Or that the villains don’t just go away because they’ve been defeated, it’s not so simple.

I also love the reinterpretation of the tales. What Talia does with her dancing gift from the fey. I love Snow’s dwarfs - that was definitely something I didn’t expect – and Snow using mirrors for magic. It’s some excellent developments of the core fairy tales, adding reality and depth to these shallow tales

Hemlock Grove, Season One, Episode Three: The Order of the Dragon

Christina is  walking through the woods, when she comes across an oddly shaped tree with a hole by the root. Christina drops her things when she comes across a dead body with it's stomach ripped out.

Norman is sitting with Mr. Pullman and he wants to know exactly what Pullman meant when he said they brought him back.  Pullman replies CPR. Pullman asks where the souls go and suggests that they were killed to find the answers. Pullman adds that it's not right that now they have to see these things and that he doesn't want to see.

Christina approaches the body and calls out, "nice one jerks, you gave me a real scare there."  She sits on the ground next to the dead body and says, "you sure look a little pale. Do you need mouth to mouth?" Who sees a dead body in the woods and even thinks about giving it mouth to mouth?

In the office, Pullman tells Norman that he sees things and Norman says that he is having a little difficulty understanding and wants to know what he sees. Pullman answers who else is going to die.

Christina leans forward to kiss the dead body and realises it's real when she sees maggots crawling all over the body.

Peter is returns  to the trailer after his night as a wolf and he finds his mother and Roman waiting for him. Roman sits up and lights a smoke and Peter goes into a back room to get some clothes. Roman asks Peter how it was and Peter replies that something was out there and that he smelled it.  Peter adds that it was something bad and adds that he and his mother are the only ones who know about him being a werewolf. Roman asks who he would tell and then promises to keep the secret. Roman grabs his jacket and says that he is going home to change and asks if he should pick up Peter later but Peter is fast asleep.  Lynda says that the change really takes it out of Peter and asks if Roman would like coffee.  Roman replies that he has school and Lynda reminds Roman of his promise.

Later that day, Peter is standing on a bridge and Roman meets him.  Roman asks what he thinks brought them there. Peter notices blood on Romans shirt and Roman pulls down his shirt and the blood forms into a pattern.  Peter asks if Roman is okay and then he replies that they are in this together before changing into some sort of creature.  Roman jumps and wakes up on the couch.

Tom and Norman meet in the woods, where Tom informs Norman that he got a strange call this morning from the state psychiatric board.  Apparently, they inquiring about Pullman's condition and jurisdictional questions about his transfer to Hemlock Acres.  Norman asks why this is odd and Tom points out that you don't get that kind of call without a push and that the only ones around there with that kind of clout are Norman's friends at the White Tower. Norman replies that he does not have friends at the White Tower. Tom says that he is probably over thinking it but Norman did him a favor and he thought Norman deserved a heads up. Norman gets out of the car and dispatch informs Tom that they have found another body.

Clementine wakes to the sound of an alarm clock and clearly she is not a morning person. Clementine says, "he wants you to be strong and starts to get dressed.  It seems like Clementine spent the night with a woman, who asks why she does this to herself because all Clementine knows how to do is take. Clementine does not answer and leaves.

At a church, Clementine is walking with a priest and apologizes for not returning his calls. The priest says that he heard Michael is in town and asks if Clementine has seen him. Clementine answers that she has not seen him and that if anything were wrong,  the priest would know before anyone else did. The father hands her the paper and Clementine reads the story of the girl who has been mauled to death. As he walks away, he tells Clementine, "this one is going to be tough even for you."

Clementine approaches Tom and his deputy badge and claims to be with the Fish and Wildlife Service. Tom introduces himself and says that he heard she was headed their way and that he wishes it were for fishing season. Tom admits that this is out of their jurisdiction.  Tom is driving Clementine to the scene and he tells her that people in town are scared.  Clementine asks if Lisa was found in the same condition as Brooke.  Tom replies that the bite pattern indicates that it's the same animal but that the body had been left out there for too long to tell if its the same species. Tom adds that based on the condition of Brooke's car that it had to be a big one.  Clementine is puzzled by the lack of animal tracks at both scenes.

At the high school, Shelly is sitting on the ground crying because she is surrounded by boys asking who she ate first. They ask who tasted better and if she ate them quickly or slowly. They ask Shelly who is next and then Roman approaches and comforts her when he sees that she is surrounded. The boys claim that they don't know what is wrong with Shelly and that she just started crying. Peter tells one of the boys to kiss the other and when he does, Peter tells the to get out of there.  Peter has to pause to wipe the blood running from his nose.

Peter and Roman are leaving the school together and Roman asks Peter if he is sure that it wasn't him and Peter replies that he never goes out on an empty stomach.  Roman suggests that maybe Peter blacked out and that he showed him the transformation because he wants to get caught. They head down into a underground era and Peter hands him a joint and tells him to smoke it. Roman asks for a name and Peter says Vargolf. Peter says that a wolf will only attack if its hungry or provoked and that a Vargolf is a wolf that has gone insane. When Roman asks insane how, Peter replies that it doesn't eat what it kills and that's not the way; it's like a disease. Roman asks if he is sure that's what this is and Peter replies that he could smell it.  Roman asks if it is someone he knows and Peter says that he doesn't know anyone else.  Roman suggests that they find the vargolf to make him stop and they are interrupted when a student bursts through. They wait for the girl to go past and Roman asks Peter if he has ever heard of the order of the dragon.  Apparently, they are a group of the knights from the crusades.  Roman says that his mother told him about them and that he always wanted to be a warrior.  Roman again says that he sees things sometimes and that he hears these whispers but doesn't always know if they are real or not. Roman adds that he needs to do something and Peter says that he doesn't and stands up to leave. Peter suggests to Roman that maybe this is something he should be discussing with his guidance counselor. When Roman asks what that means, Peter yells that it means no and takes off leaving Roman alone.

Orphan Black: Season One, Episode Four: Effects of External Conditions

The clone who attacked Sarah in the last episode is covered in blood and is busy stitching up her wounds. She mumbles, "I'm not Beth."A little boy makes his way downstairs and steps in a trail of blood. When he goes into the bathroom, he sees the clone and she motions for him to be quiet.

Sarah heads over to Allison's and tells her about the clone she met. Allison starts freaking out and wants to know if the clone knows about her or her kids and is worried that Sarah led the new clone to her door.  Sarah assures Allison that the clone has been impaled with rebar and that she wouldn't do that have lead her to Allison's door. Allison says that she has been living the nightmare much longer than Sarah and that she provides financially and has a family to protect. Sarah hands over the 75K and admits that she was going to steal it but she has a family she is concerned about as well.  Allison is surprised to learn that Sarah has a biological daughter.  Allison wants to know why Sarah didn't tell her before.  Sarah says that she didn't and asks Allison to be available because she might need her.

Sarah is over at Felix's and is skyping with Cosima, who is talking about the blade that Sarah found.  Felix asks what Cosima is talking about and Cosima says that if the clone is not dead yet, they need to find out who she is.  Felix suggests that Cosima is mad because he considers the new clone to be a homicidal maniac. Cosima replies that they need to find her because she's got answers.  Sarah adds that the only way she is going to do that is to go back to being a cop. Felix tells Sarah no because impersonating a dead officer is like a whole new crime.  Sarah says that she feels safer with the cops and that Art is already looking for the murderer and going back will allow her to keep an eye on the investigation.  Felix goes through the list of clones and says of all of them, Sarah is the most normal.

Allison is packing a bag for the kids because she is sending them to her parents.  Her husband is not impressed and wants to know why she cancelled all of their activities.  Allison says that she wants some time to herself.

Sarah meets Art where the clone left her bike. Art tells Sarah that her kids, his wife and his ex wife thank her for what she did.  When they go inside the apartment, Sarah learns that the killer wore gloves and that there are no prints. They walk in and find the mess in the bathroom where the clone had cleaned up and stitched up the wounds.  A woman tells Art about her child seeing the killer and that Trevor said that it was an angry angel.  Art asks Trevor what the angry angel looked like and he points to Sarah.  Art is surprised to know that the perpetrator they after is a woman.  Sarah asks to speak to Trevor. She assures him that she is not the clone and Trevor says, "she said you would come." Trevor pulls out a fortune teller clearly made by the clone because it is covered with blood and shows different methods of killing.  Sarah asks to see it but Art sees it in her hand and bags it as evidence.

Sarah is on the phone with Mrs. S to confirm that she will there before 8 PM. Kira asks if Mrs. S is talking to her mom but Mrs. S lies and says no.  Mrs.S then tells Sarah that if she lets Kira down that she will not allow Sarah to see her again. Kira continues with her painting of her mother.

Back at the station, they go over the facts of the case and the fact that Katja was killed by a woman.  They begin by trying to set up a profile of the new clone. They are waiting for DNA evidence and Sarah lies when Hardcastle asks if they got a match on the fingerprints. The meeting is interrupted when Sarah is told she has a phone call.  She answers the call saying "detective Childs" and is told that she is not Beth because Beth is dead. Sarah asks what she wants and the clone says that they have a connection and Sarah brings up the rebar.  The clone suggests that they need to meet again, so Sarah asks for her name and is told Helena. When Sarah asks for a last name, Helena is not forthcoming and points out that though Sarah is doing police work, it cannot last and that it would not be good for her if the cops should find her. Helena hangs up saying that she already gave her directions.

Art and Angela come rushing out to find a map believing that there is a secret address in the fortune teller.  Sure enough, they find one and want to head straight to the site but Hardcastle tells them to wait for emergency services and tactical. Sarah stands up and Art tells her not to worry. They head outside and Sarah tries to take a different car but Art says that after last night they need to stick together.  What they don't know is that they are being watched by the clone.  As soon as Sarah leaves, the Helena sneaks into the station pretending to be Beth and looks over the evidence the police have gathered thus far.

When Sarah and Art arrive at the scene, tactical takes them in for a closer look. They head into the basement where they find a mattress and evidence of more self surgery.  When they flick on the lights, they find that the same symbols all over the walls that they found on the fortune teller. Art wonders if the perpetrator is saying that she is a serial killer and Angela says that it could be the same victim over and over again.  Sarah quips that the suspect just draws like a third grader. One figure has a question mark and Art wonders whether it's the perp or the the next victim.

At the station, Helena has made her way to Beth's old desk and she reads through the messages and looks at the picture of Beth and Paul. The phone rings and it's Paul and so Helena claims to have been beaten up and asks him to come and get her.

Back at the house, Art says that the perp led them there and that she wanted the cops to see this. Sarah steps aside calls Felix and says that there is no way that she can see Kira tonight because she is stuck with Art and Helena is right on top of her.  Sarah is worried about leading Helena back to Kira. Felix reminds Sarah about the ultimatum and Sarah tells him that she needs to be in two places at once and says that if anyone can do that they can. Felix then heads over to see Allison to tell her that Sarah needs help with her daughter.

When Sarah returns to the police station, Raj tells Sarah that she cleaned right up and changed quickly.  He of course saw Helena and assumed it was Sarah. While she was in the backroom, Helena had rearranged the evidence and Art is not impressed when he finds this.  When Sarah returns to her desk, she finds picture of crime scene of Maggie Chen.

Felix is sitting down with Allison and says that Sarah misses tonight then she might never get Kira back.  Allison is incredulous and comments on what she believes is Sarah's bad parenting.  She suggests that Kira might be better off with Mrs. S and Felix reminds Allison that Sarah is out there playing cat and mouse with a killer clone so that her children don't end up orphans. Felix adds that she needs to step up.  Allison begins to practice being Sarah and it's not good.

Sarah pulls out the knife and notices that the mark on Chen's neck is the same as on the knife.  Sarah is forced to hide the knife when Angela comes over and says that a woman on woman murder had to be personal, so they have to find the link between Jane Doe (Katja) and the perpetrator. When Angela leaves, Sarah goes back to the file.

Felix is going through Allison's clothing and is not happy with what he is finding.  Allison says that she does not shop second hand. Felix then gets a pair of scissors and starts cutting Allison's clothing.

At the station, Paul shows up and is concerned about Beth/Sarah because of the phone call.  Paul says that he took the rest of the day off and starts to escort her out.  Art runs into them and asks if everything is okay and Paul says it's Beth's first day back she and she beat up, so it's no wonder she wants to leave. Art asks what Paul is talking about Sarah quickly jumps between to the two men and tells Art that she will handle it.  Outside, Sarah explains to Paul that she didn't mean for him to come and get her right now and that she called because the case she is working on is so upsetting. Paul tells her that they need to spend some together to figure out what is going on between them because most of it he likes a lot.  The two kiss and Paul leaves, telling her to think about it.  Sarah's phone goes off and its Cosima, who says that Maggie Chen and Beth are connected and that Beth never told them about it.  Sarah confirms that Beth didn't tell Art either. Sarah adds that Helena was at the cop shop and that unless they meet alone, that Helena is going to get them both busted. Cosima asks what the cops know and Sarah says that Helena is a churchy psychopath, a loner and was probably abused as a child. Cosima says that the fish on a weapon reads as a personal crusade.  Cosima believes that to extreme religious creation types that the clones would be abominations and if someone told Helena that this was the way to redeem yourself in the eyes of God that it makes sense that she became an angry angel.

Hemlock Grove: Season One, Episode Two: The Angel

Episode two ends where one left off, with Peter telling Roman that he didn't kill Brooke and in fact assumed that Roman did it.  Roman points out that the people in town are saying that he is a werewolf and Peter asks Roman if he believes every rumor he hears. Roman asks why they are both there and Peter asks in return if Roman has ever heard of a coincidence. Roman again asks if Peter did it and when Peter denies it, Roman asks who was it.  Peter says that it could have been a bear, cougar, or even creative suicide. Roman admits to knowing Brooke a little and that she liked his car. Roman adds that he knew Vince, who did some work for his mother.  Roman says that he liked Vince's stories. Roman asks, "what's it like living like you people?"  Peter replies that there's always something over the hill that he has to see.  When a cop car pulls up, Roman tells Peter to be cool and not to run.

Roman walks over to the cop and tells the deputy that he is a night owl and asks who is with him.  Tom says that it's the punk Gypsy and wants to know what Roman and Peter are up to. Roman says that they were talking about the mysteries of mortality. When Roman is grabbed, he says, "my old lady is going to be a pain in the balls," and the officer repeats him word for word. Roman then turns to Tom, who calls him a spooky fucker and the two return to the car and drive off.  Peter asks Roman how he did that and Roman answers do what. Roman then sniffs at the blood on his fist.

Letha is in bed when she wakes to a bright light shining on her.  She gets out of bed when she sees a shadowy figure.  The figure then opens it arms and wings appear.

Shelly is at the computer and she is busy writing an email to Norman. Shelly tells him that she followed his advice and asserted herself to her mother. We get a flash to Shelly, Roman and Olivia at a restaurant, where Shelly tries to order for herself but Olivia informs Jenny the waitress that Shelly wants the usual.  Olivia tells Shelly that she has to eat her meat. Jenny interjects that Shelly is just trying to watch her figure for the boys at school. Shelly writes to Normal that she is more than a living marionette to dance at the pull of her strings. Shelly got her salad and feels that she won a measure of respect, though admits that by the time they were leaving, she was hungry again and her mother was right. Shelly goes onto write that there has not been another attack since Brooke died.  She then talks about Peter, who she believes is favoring her with his charm because he smiles and winks at her when he walks by.  Shelly tells Norman that the kids are saying that Peter is a werewolf.  Shelly then finishes with her hope that Peter was not involved in death of Brooke.

Peter is at home reading the email, when Marie and Letha walk in the room. Marie informs Peter that Letha is pregnant. Letha kneels at her father's feet.

The kids are back in school and when a girl in Roman's class asks to go the bathroom, Roman quickly follows and they end up having sex in the girls bathroom.  Peter is walking by and stops to listen at the door and he is surprised by Letha.  Peter tells her that it is exactly what it looks like.

Norman meets up with Olivia and asks her if she had anything to do with it.  Olivia is not sure what he is talking about and so Norman tells her that Letha is pregnant. Olivia replies that she is not equipped for such a thing and that Dr. Price's proclivities lie elsewhere.  Norman yells that he is not fucking around so Olivia tells him to lower his voice and sit down.  Once again, Olivia tells Norman that she had nothing to do with it and asks if it has occurred to him that Letha might be reluctant to share with her father the specific circumstances of the fornication. Apparently, Letha is claiming that she is still a virgin and was visited by an angel. Norman adds that Letha claimed that the angel had visited her this summer and that she didn't want to upset her parents but now believes that time has come where she needs their help. Olivia says that Letha has a boyfriend but Normal claims that is not likely. Norman believes that Letha was raped and her mind built this fantasy to protect her.  Olivia asks if Norman has gone to the police and he asks if he should tell them about his suspicion that this attack happened in July and that Letha will not corroborate. Norman's only hope is to talk Letha into having an abortion and Olivia asks if that is for the best. Norman points out that having her carry to child a term, which Letha is convinced is immaculate conception at 17, when at any minute the actual event could come back to her is not a good idea.  Olivia asks why Norman thinks she is involved and Norman replies that he has no idea what Olivia would be capable of if she was afraid of losing him.

Peter and Olivia have sex and he laces up her corset for her with a look of disgust on his face. When she turns around Olivia says that she was afraid that he meant it when he said they were through.  Peter replies that he meant it and that he didn't want this to happen. Olivia tells him that this was spiteful. Olivia then brings up Brooke's death and Peter tells her that Shelly believes a werewolf was responsible. Olivia brushes this off and suggests that their daughters both have terrible imaginations. Peter is finished getting dressed and he tells Olivia again that he meant it and walks out the room as Olivia replies, "what makes you think I don't know that."

Roman is in the hallway looking at the snakes, as an announcement informs the student body that there will be a police presence at the dance that night and unacceptable costumes will not be allowed. Peter approaches Shelly and asks her if she is going to the dance and Shelly shakes her head no.  Peter says that there is not much point in him going then. A student walks up from behind and slams Peter into the lockers calling him a wolf fucker.  Shelly uses a machine to say that she is sorry, but Peter tells her not to be sorry because she is too pretty. As Peter is picking up the books he dropped, Roman appears and tells him to keep his hands off of Shelly.  When Peter sort of laughs, Roman asks if this is funny to him. Roman laughs and then asks Peter if he wants a lift home.

Roman is driving Peter home in his convertible and they are talking about how amazing the car is.  Roman asks about Peter's father and Peter replies that he is out there somewhere.  Roman says that being raised by a single mother makes one more sensitive to chicks and stuff. Roman adds that he is a pretty sensitive guy and the two share a laugh.  When they arrive at the trailer, Roman tells Peter that he had a dream about a drawing Peter made. Roman adds that he gets a dream sometimes like something really important is about to happen.  Peter thanks Roman for the ride and gets out of the car.

Da Vinci's Demons Season 1, Episode 2: The Serpent

Leonardo is on a boat, in an underground cavern talking to an old man about the cryptic speech Al Rahim gave him . He finishes the line “I’m the son of earth and starry heaven, I’m thirsty, please give me something to drink from the fountain of memory. See as I have seen into infinity and you will be a god.” He gives Leo a cup to drink from

Zoroaster, meanwhile, is taking Nico on a little trip grave robbing to unearth the Hanged Man for Leo, he points out the symbols pressed into the Earth in Hebrew to warn of anyone disturbing the grave.

Leo drinks from the cup and the man warns him he will suffer and shows the hanging marks around his neck – and Leo wakes up just as Zoroaster and Nico arrive with the corpse. He notes the missing thumb nail then starts cutting. Let the autopsy commence.  Much queasiness follows. Leo finds the missing fingernail in the man’s stomach (wow, that’s a severe chewing your nails problem) and a key. “One man’s death opens the doorway for another.”

Elsewhere in a cottage, Lucrezia and Lorenzo are together naked but for a very annoying length of blanket. And Lorenzo openly acknowledges that Lucrezia has a husband (it’s the Italian Renaissance, deal with it) and Lorenzo complains about Count Riarrio coming to visit (see, political pillow talk, not only does it kill the mood but it totally gives all your secrets away to the pretty spies). Count Riario is Girolamo Riario who works for the Pope and does a fair but of killing for him last episode (I say again, Renaissance Italy, deal with it). He wants her to come, though she sees the awkwardness of doing so while Clarice, Lorenzo’s wife, is there and he offers to invite the scoundrel, Da Vinci as well.

Leo heads to the palace in the pouring rain and runs into the jolly figure of his father, who instantly starts insulting Leo for being a bastard (there must be some rules about one’s parents being unable to mock one for one’s parentage) and how he has written the contract so he’ll be able to get rid of Leo. But this seems to be based on his belief that Leo can’t fulfill the contracts.

Grimm Season 2, Episode 18: Volcanis

“The Demon came home, and he declared that the air was not clear. ‘I smell the flesh of man’”

We have a woman how is really really excited about the ground smoking. This is apparently some kind of volcanic thing and she’s a scientist judging by the sciency things she’s saying and how excited she is about the ground smoking. As she returns to her truck, a man grabs her bag and rants and raves she give it back, it doesn’t belong to her, she hasn’t shown respect. She pepper sprays him, making him let go and giving her chance to drive off. As she leaves, talking on the phone, the man Woges into a wesen with really big horns

At the police station, poor Hank is being hovered over by Nick, Wu and Renard. He’s on holiday – he has a 3 week holiday, and he’s still working. He hasn’t taken a holiday in 4 years and they’re physically removing him from the building

At home, Juliette is still being besieged by Nick visions. She flees the house screaming at the visions and jumps into her car. She drives off – and a vision of Nick sat next to her replays another memory – she flails at it and loses control of her car, crashing. See, this is the problem with talking to imaginary friends while driving.

She ends up in hospital, visited by the real Nick. She tells him that whatever they gave her is driving her out of her mind and that she needs him to stay away from her, she can’t see him any more.

To Vienna, we’re having a big character tour this week, to Adalind who is miserable with morning sickness. And isn’t happy to have a visit from Frau Pech who has arranged a visit between Adalind and the Queen of the Scwatzwild Roma (oh, no, really? We’re going to go the “mystic gypsy” route?) Frau Pech tells her she needs to go – to find the true value of motherhood, she needs to know what her kid is worth. Yeah, that’s a different take on the “value of motherhood”.
