Doctor Who, Season 11, Episode 10: The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos

It's the last episode of Doctor Who as we hit the season finale other than the New Years Day episode (she's coming back though!)

We've loved this Doctor,  she has been amazing and endearing from the start - but the writing has not supported her - the treatment of Yasmin (and utter failure to development) and the lack of classic Who elements was an issue. This Doctor deserves better writing

Killjoys, Season 4, Episode 10: Sporemaggedon

So Aneela is back - and everyone’s not super ok about that as D’avin and Johnny hurry her onto Lucy to answer questions and make it clear that they’re super not happy with her given the number of people she’s stabbed and all.

There she reminds them that body swapping is totally something you can do - Khlyen and D’avin did it last season. She also tells us what the Green is - well she mentions lots of woo woo but ultimately the green is a big repository of memory: a big transdimensional space where nothing is forgotten and everything exists. So kind of like a giant Wayback machine

No this doesn’t explain the super healy Hullen - but that’s nothing to do with the Green, that’s just The Lady’s shenanigans. She has a plan, she and D’avin go in, they grab Dutch and D’avin uses his strange Anti-hullen woo granted by the military experiments on him and when she’s stunned they leave.

Johnny insists he wants to come as well and Aneela warns him that since the Green is a big sea of memory, The Lady can use your worst moments, your memories against you and the more you care the more it’ll hurt. Since Johnny is a big ol’ carebear, this isn’t ideal. It’s also why Aneela wants to know nothing about her son Jaq - if you care about someone it can be used against you.

Of course Johnny insists so it’s off to the RAC and the pool of green. Which is a problem because Turin knows who Aneela is and has HUGE issues with all the people she’s killed, people he cares about and is prepared to shoot her in the face. And after the death of Pip Zeph doesn’t want to see anyone with Dutch’s face

But Aneela talks woo-woo and science with Zeph, intriguing her and eventually D’avin gives Turin the Green killing spore to reassure him he has options - but first they need to rescue Dutch,

To the Green!

In the Green Dutch and Aneela meet up to talk about a box Khlyen left for Dutch to give Aneela and I’m not even sure what is going on here because the layers are just confusing.

Everyone quickly enters their own hellscape as the Lady throws all their worst memories against them. Dutch and D’avin manage to meet up and they have to pull Johnny away from a heartbreaking scene with Pawter where Johnny tragically asks them to stop him turning round to look at the fake Pawter. Ouch

However when the Lady throws fake goons at them so she can talk to Aneela, D’avin points out since this is all their memory they can easily access memories of the various armouries they’ve been in - and fight back with big guns. Until D’avin pulls out his super power which is very very effective.

Killjoys: Season 4, Episode 9: The Kids Are Alright

It’s time for Jaq to go into hiding - and Jaq rightly predicts that his dad is going to Snot Cry because he’s just so fluffy and emotional.

D’avin and Johnny track down Delle Sayah in her hidden base - turns out it’s one of Khlyen’s hidden safe houses. She’s there dragging up all the research he hid about the Hullen and green. She does intend to track down the Nine and take over - but only when she has Aneela by her side because she’s still very much in love. So much so she even moves Johnny to declare he’ll bring Aneela back. Despite him not being a fan of Delle Sayah after the whole murdered Pawter thing

They leave Jaq with her - she’s not thrilled with the new name and Delle Sayah is clear that Osman is his middle name - and Dutch urges him to learn from her as there are many ways of fighting

Dutch also reveals to Johnny about the weird scars appearing on her back - which Dutch assumes to be Aneela. Johnny isn’t thrilled at being left out of the loop here

The plan now is to take back the RAC - to free all the kids captured on board and to seize the pool of green. This means a big reunion with Turin and Fancy and Zeph and Pip (who is slightly nervous about Dutch after she headbutted him when he was first possessed by the brain spider but as Zeph reassures him that if Dutch wanted him dead he totally would be. She’s… not wrong).

Turin gives out his tactics for the attack - with Dutch snarking all the way until Turin has to take her aside to tell her off and threaten to demote her - and she rightly points out what bullshit this is, this isn’t about Killjoys and he has no rank.

Instead they settle into a kind of fun dynamic where Turin is the grumpy father figure and they’re all his wise-cracking kids who respect him and love him but don’t necessarily do as they’re told. Especially Pree and Dutch who are the Problem Children

The plan is to send Weej in first and while everyone has reservations, Turin is clear that this is NOT TO BE QUESTIONED and he trusts Weej )and points to Johnny for the “isn’t it hard when a younger cuter model comes along” snark at Fancy because that is definitely an A+ burn.

Unfortunately there’s a new Hullen forcefield around the RAC and Weej ends up splattered. Alas poor Weej, I thought you’d be an interesting character, what a shame.

To take down the shield Johnny says lots of science things but basically they need a magic box (Johnny is also fretting a little about being a third wheel now that Dutch and D’avin are back on but Lucy is always there for him) which involves Dutch and D’avin going undercover in a hippie cult (the horror! The horror!) before claiming the box and taking it to Johnny. Of course being Killjoys this means they only have a limited time before it causes seizures. Of course there’s a time limit.

Zeph also does some research on the scars on Dutch’s back which have been transmitted by Aneela: she visits the Scarback dominatrix who can confirm what they are and what the symbols mean individually - but not what they mean collectively as one symbol. And despite lots of thinky sex with Pip, Zeph can’t figure it out

Killjoys, Season 4, Episode 6: Baby, Face Killer

Having discovered the discrepancy of Dutch’s memories it’s time to see what that means. On utopia there’s an unpleasant guy who can use technology to turn your memories into a film (which he uses for all kinds of unscrupulous ways, of course) and they use this to get transcribe Dutch’s weird Khlyen memories.

First step is to send out images of the fake assassin to see who she is - though she doesn’t appear on any database. Which is suspicious itself.

But it is picked up by an Ominous Blond Guy. He also has a symbol on his neck which is also in Dutch’s Khlyen-vision-dream. Lots of ominous.

On Lucy we have the new Hullen child and Delle Sayah is leaving but not before she gives her son some basic lessons on proper etiquette. Including using the proper utensils (unlike his dad who uses hands) and a name: Ozzman Kit Rin, named after an honoured member of the Nine known for their cunning, greed and never being formally implicated in some terrible atrocity. Such is the accolades among the Nine

Which is where she is going now - the Nine are scared, confused and laying low. And cowards need a leader. Ozzman hugs her goodbye and she reminds him that physical contact is for the poor.

Delle Sayah - awful in the most perfect ways

D’avin isn’t a huge fan of the name since it lacks completely superfluous apostrophes but suggests that Ozzman should pick his own name and make his own choices. Which somewhat confuses Ozzman who rather thinks parents make the choices for kids and D’avin flails a little when confronted by this 2 day old who looks 16. D’avin is generally freaking out about what it means to be a dad and Johnny offers some vague reassurance (their own dad being terrible, D’avin was a father figure for Johnny but also kind of made some big fails there too).

Given what the kid is facing, Dutch suggests he needs training - D’avin asks if she’s offering and she says no, she’s insisting. So begins training with Dutch in weapons, assassination, protection et al which doesn’t mean wearing leather pants but does mean using the crowded Utopia station to teach Ozzman who to be aware of his surroundings even in a crowd

Which is where Ominous Blond Man catches up with them after killing the memory reader, knocking out D’avin and hunting down Ozzman and Dutch. Luckily Ozzman has Hullen woo-woo which alerts him to danger ahead of time letting him dodge some shots and go on the run with Ozzman wanting food and them randomly running through a sex worker’s session meaning Ozzman has lots of questions Dutch really really really isn’t going to answer. But she does insist he has a family with them

Ominous Blond lures them into a trap and holds Ozzman hostage - but it’s apparent he’s not actually there for him. And Dutch wants him alive to answer questions - especially since she recognises the Ominous Symbol on his neck from her Khlyen dream. So when he escapes Dutch then contacts him to invoke Ye Olde Assassin’s code. Which basically means you can invoke a truce so you can talk about assassiny things

Killjoys, Season 4, Episode 4: What to Expect When You're Expecting... an Alien Parasite

So everything is super bad and D’avin recounts all this to Dutch while trying to give it a positive spin. There is no real spin here

But can I say this episode seems to have an awful lot of recapping in this episode which I don’t think it actually all that useful or necessary? Most of what is being recapped happened last episode and we don’t need this much fill in the blanks.

Delle Sayah is giving birth. And she is awesome. Her snark at D’avin, the father, at Zeph who is being the attending doctor is all priceless. I especially like her reading a magazine, totally phoning in lamaze breathing, examining Zeph’s nails and asking “is it out yet” while being unwilling to push. She’s Qreshi.

She also demands hard drugs or hard booze, bar keep. She and Pree has some nice exchanges with him passive aggressively offering her ice chips and reminding her that she’s actually an enemy and she knocks him out with his bowl of ice

Honestly Delle Sayah never ceases to be made of awesome. And these two have to be enemies or the world would end.

The problem is that we have Hullen baby issues. The Hullen baby is growing super fast and can’t be born vaginally because it’s too big. Unfortunately a C-section isn’t possible because of Delle Saya’s ultra healing powers close any incision before they can get the baby out. This is a problem and their one solution - to use D’avin’s anti-Hullen powers seems likely to kill her and the baby.

Meanwhile Johnny is now doing well. Reunion with Dutch doesn’t go well as Johnny is going through all the pain, trying to bang his head on a wall and generally falling apart. He can barely look at Dutch and she is determined to save him so heads to the planet with the nearest source of goo which derails everyone else’s plan to try and get to the Armada - which is somewhere.

Except the goo there has also turned to crystal. In fact all the goo everywhere in the Quad has turned to crystal - that means there’s no goo to complete Johnny’s turn to Hullen or to cleanse the goo from him. There’s also no goo to help Delle Sayah with her giving birth. Which is all unfortunate

In particular this is bad for Johnny because he is half-human and half-Hullen. That means He is alternating between caring for and loving his friends and family and then not giving a shit and then caring again. He’s constantly losing them, getting them back and then losing them again - and Johnny adamantly refuses to live like that. Being pure human or pure Hullen would be tolerable but not this

Killjoys, Season 4, Episode 3: Bro-d Trip

Hullen Johnny continues to cause shenanigans. He and D’avin have abandoned Delle Saya and are going on a road trip with him being the most annoying little brother there has ever been. The plan is to find some green goo so Johnny can use his newly minted Hullen-ness to contact Dutch and save them all.

Of course as they go, D’avin becomes increasingly disturbed by Johnny’s Hullen skills (especially since he accuses Johnny of liking his new super powers just a bit too much) and powerful Hullen mood swings. Even those may not be what it seems - because Johnny is definitely losing himself to his Hullenness, the occasional Dutch hallucination is all that’s left of Vintage Johnny and he definitely has his own nefarious end game.

Johnny does ask D’avin to kill him if he goes full Hullen but that may be manipulation as well - especially when they get physical several times and Johnny definitely has the edge over his brother.

Plans are somewhat scuppered by Warden Juno managing to send some troops after them, requiring Johnny to use Hullen skills to rig a bomb to kill them - using his Hullen healing skills to take the blast and protect D’avin… and D’avin takes the opportunity to chain Johnny up. Johnny tries to push all of D’avin’s emotional vulnerable spots (making the point on how emotion is a weakness) but D’avin won’t bend, especially since he can see Johnny talking to his hallucinations

It isn’t enough though - when Johnny finds the green pool of Hullen goo he turns on D’avin and even though D’avin is pointing a gun at his brother Johnny wins, breaks his chains and shoots D’avin.

Who is thankfully wearing body armour and they fight - him trying to reach Vintage Johnny, resorting to using his anti-goo powers and still losing and getting strangled. Until Dutch rises from the goo pool and shoots Johnny

The pool crystalises - which is new - and Dutch collapses.

Back at the prison we have Supreme Queen Before Whom Everyone Should Worship Delle Sayah facing off against Juno the warden. Bea advises her not to mess with him to which Delle Sayah says:

No honey, I never want to mess with men like this, but if you don’t they’ll never leave you alone.

As Juno establishes his authority Bea begs Delle Sayah to keep her head down

“Keeping my head down isn’t my thing, it messes with the crown.”

So she waves her authority as being head of the Nine but Warden Juno isn’t into that, doesn’t care and intends to sell her baby (after turning off the cameras - apparently selling organs for the company is ok. Selling babies for his own profit is not). He quips about her delicate condition to which Delle Sayah slams several people into hard surfaces and takes several drugged darts before finally going down

Killjoys, Season 4, Episode 2: Johnny Dangerously

After last episode it’s time to catch up with the rest of the cast - and remind us that everyone else is amazing and fun

So John, D’avin and a very pregnant Delle Saya (who is pregnant with D’avin’s child due to… shenanigans) have been dumped on a planet. It’s in the middle of nowhere and definitely not in the Quad. Thankfully the three of them come with a lot of sass. So much sass.

In fact, can I take a moment to praise the world. Sure we have orange coloured evil to the right of me, the ominous iron threat to the left of me and incompetence all around me: but I have Killjoys and Wynonna Earp providing me with THE BEST SASS AND SNARK. Sure it doesn’t balance, but I’ll take what I can.

Some people try to rob them but make the mistake of underestimating the pregnant lady which means they get beaten by an angry Delle Saya. But Johnny who is actually severely injured collapses so they have to take him to the only settlement they can find. The inhabitants of that settlement are duly intimidated by the gang who are stomping around, snarling and pointing guns at people to try and get some treatment. But there’s no doctor and limited supplies which leaves one choice - Hullen goo. Yes Delle Saya turns him into a Hullen

And. It. Is. Awesome.

Seriously Hullen Johnny is hilarious and awesome and more than a little terrifying with his massive mood swings and his habit of pointing guns at people to steal their hats. D’avin notes that Delle Saya didn’t mention Evil Johnny as a side effect but she points out she’s in survival mode here so… yeah she’ll lie. And Johnny knows that D’avin is getting a little protective of Delle Saya due to the spawn. Delle Saya also warns that at some point Johnny will lose all his emotional connections and it will be super awful the more emotional connections he has. Which, yeah is going to be bad because Johnny is a walking hug. He does get visions of Dutch though to keep him Light Side

The people of this town have a deal for the gang - they say they’re sharecroppers with a big mean overseer about to screw them all over unless the killjoys speak for them. Which kind of isn’t what the Killjoys do but hey they’ll get a ship off the planet.

When the people arrive to be dealt with. Johnny shoots them. All with epic skill and coolness. To D’avin’s horror Johnny does defend himself that he only shot people in the head who had guns because he’s a nice guy still honest. He’s not a nice guy. He is awesome though

So what Johnny figured out with his brilliant Hullen brain is this is actually a prison, the people they’re with are prisoners. It’s pretty nifty deduction. Hullen Johnny is awesome. So it turns out they’re actually in a debtors prison where people are forced to pay their debts with nasty means including growing organs and having them harvested just to grow more organs - only the prison tacks on so many charges they can never get out of debt. Yup, that sounds ultimately evil here- Hullen take a step back.

So they make a new plan - except evil Johnny sabotages things because a) humans are trash and b) Johnny is awesome.

Colony, Season Three, Episodes One: Maquis

Image result for colony season three

Season three pretty much reboots the series, moving our band of survivors from California to Seattle, with one stop along the way.  When last we left the Bowmans, with Snyder's help, they had managed to escape Los Angeles just as a rendition was occurring, with the gauntlet no less.  Given that the entire world has been invaded that doesn't leave them with many options. The Bowmans settle in the woods in a small cabin.  It's a huge change of pace because they aren't actively in the fight anymore, nor are they actively running for their lives. Snyder has been made into the family cook and water fetcher because he has proven to be capable of little else.  The Bowmans fish, read books and play cards. It's a level of domesticity they haven't have since the invasion.

The aliens however are never far from their thoughts and so the area around the cabin has been completely booby trapped in case they have to flea quickly. Each day a drone takes a survey of the area.  The first sign of trouble is when a drone crosses the barrier for the first time. They always knew that this set up would temporary, even if it finally felt normal for the first time in a long time. Bram has been picking up resistance radio communications and wants to reach out but at this point, Will prefers to lay low for as long as possible.

Things come to a head when a ship buzzes overhead before crashing several miles away.  Will knows that they cannot afford to ignore this and tells his family to prepare to get moving while he and Snyder go check out what is going on. Even after six months, Will doesn't trust Snyder but he does believe that Snyder will best able to make sense of whatever they come across.  Snyder and Will head out into the Woods and manage to find an old ski lift. When they get to the top, they see that not only has the shipped crashed, it seems as though it has been shot down. This immediately gets Will's wheels turning.  What if the guests are actually at war with another alien species? Will wonders if it is possible to turn the enemy of an enemy into a friend.

Back at the cabin, Kate and Bram argue about reaching out to the resistance.  Bram feels that it's no longer safe where they are and that they need to do something soon.  Kate however continues to remain noncommittal, as the two of them dig up the gauntlet from its hiding place.  Bram goes as far as to question who is actually in charge of the family, arguing that if his mother sides with him, then it's two against one.

Snyder and Will return and barely have enough time to report on what they've found before the arrival of a kill squad.  Snyder is ordered to take Gracie and Charlie to their designated hiding space while Bram, Will and Kate hold down the fort and buy them just enough time to escape.  Will, Kate and Bram fire from the cabin for as long as they can before starting a recording of gun fire and fleeing themselves through the woods.  They kill each soldier they come across and Kate barely manages to avoid death herself.  Sensing that Gracie, Charlie and Snyder might need more time, Will sends Bram to catch up with them and cover their back while they continue to try draw the soldiers away.  Will and Kate find themselves in an open field and drone comes out of nowhere, killing the two soldier who had taken aim at them.  Will immediately jumps in front of Kate blocking the drone from seeing her. Once the drone scans Will, it moves off on its own. Kate is suitably surprised and Will explains that this isn't the first time this has happened.

Stargate Origins, Season 1, Episode 8, 9 10

So james and Catherine have clearly been happily busy since they wake up half naked in a tent in time for Asset’s arrival with her Nazi fanpoodles and professor Langford who continues to serve as nazi translator with no objections

The people all bow and scrape before Asset, their god, and for some bizarre reason Brucke the Nazi decides that he wants one of his Nazis to fight one of Asset’s soldier in hand to hand combat to the death to prove whether their minions will die for for their leaders. Which seems… bizarre. Unsurprisingly Asset’s warrior wins because a) he has a spear vs a knife and b) Asset’s arm is armed with medieval weaponry and therefore used to hand-to-hand combat more than the Nazis who are armed with guns.. I have absolutely no idea why he would think this was remotely a good idea.

When he sees his soldier about to die, he decides to shoot the warrior to save his soldier which really annoys Asset but she decides to let it go. And then he murders his Nazi soldier.

Eva is absolutely enraged that he dare kill a Nazi soldier and servant of of Hitler. She is not behind his god claims and is a loyal Nazi. So, y’know, evil either way. She keeps snarling at him from now on and has some pretty good put downs. He’s still promising Asset lots of slaves to convince her to keep allying with him.

Watching all this Catherine does her standard thing of wanting to charge in and get herself killed and James does his thing of stopping her, as he does. This dynamic is getting old.

Asset also makes a big speech about how she can give things to people and how she can take them away - and decides to break her healing stick she had given to the people. She has a tear in her eye while doing it so clearly she does care which is very un-Goa’uldy but there’s still not a lot of explanation of why she did this rather than have it used to heal her downed warrior? Serqet, the hotpants Goa’uld tries to handwave this but it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

What it does do is convince Kasuf and all his people that the Nazi has corrupted their god which I’m assuming is not her goal but who even knows.

Catherine speaks to Kasuf and shows him Stargate symbols so he can lead her to a place where various codes and co-ordinates for the Stargate are. She copies them down - then destroys them so the Nazis can’t use them. Of course when she returns to James and Wasif she realises Asset can just dial it up for them. On the way she tries to talk Kasuf out of his gods, that they’re enslaving him - but he insists they’re free and genuinely worship the gods. It’s hard to convince people they’re slaves when they don’t believe it? That’s the advantage of calling themselves god in the first place.

Waif and James plot how to get to the Stargate - and Wasif is very very very concerned about what the Nazis can do with all the naqueda and the Stargate, while Catherine and James are mainly concerned with each other (Wasif is finally frustrated by this).

Langford finally finds something resembling a spine and doesn’t translate Asset asking if they should kill Catherine et al. Eva continues to give Bruke shit and Bruke continues to be more and more of a megalomaniac. Langford also finally tells Asset that nazis are not nice people and Langford and the Nazi fight, Asset and Sequet just watch to let the humans fight their own battles

Asset also seems to have raided Lady Gaga’s wardrobe while Sequet is still rocking her hotpants.

Stargate Origins: Season 1, Episode 6 & 7

So this rather bizarre, not especially well made but full of pretty people strangeness continues

The Nazis, still bizarrely speaking English, use the professor to translate for them and the professor does so for he is a jellyfish. They want to make an alliance with the Goa’uld for their shiny tech so they show Aset a film reel of Nazi Germany which Aset seems to find impressive and her minion seems to be a bit weird about a projector

Isn’t Goa’uld technology rather advanced and their armies rather larger for them to be that impressed by Nazi Germany?

And why is this Goa’uld impressed by, basically, shadow puppetry? And was she really impressed by a machine gun?

Y’know looking at the main series and this one, I question why the male Goa’uld seemed to wear rather a lot of clothing up to and including metal gold suites while the female Goa’uld wear a few scraps of nothing and, for one of these, daisy dukes.

Laughably the wikia actually says Goa’uld have no concept of gender (despite having queens and rigid gender roles. So hmmmmm)

Aset also notes that Nazi Germany takes many slaves which a) makes Aset thinks humans are ready to be enslaved again and means this show is dancing in dubious dubious territory. And b) this is what the Nazis can do for her: give her lots and lots of slaves

Because last episode she was all; for getting allies to fight Ra has turned into getting slaves to worship her. Her attention span is somewhat limited it seems

The professor also needs to grow a spine.

In exchange she’s going to give them the magic rock lots of Goa’uld tech is made out of which can smash through most things. Because this is pre-energy weapons and the Goa’uld fight by hitting stuff?

Now to the three pretty but inept people

Stargate Origins, Season 1, Episode 4 & 5

Time for more impossibly pretty people to keep investigating the desert land beyond the Stargate (I’m assuming this is Abydos because it looks a lot like it).

The pretty Wasif, pretty Catherine and impossibly pretty James go through the Stargate, arrive in Abydos and begin to set up their theme for the next two episodes: Catherine and James argue constantly while Wasif provides the odd word and the odd comic relief. I won’t say he’s cast as the comic relief because that would be like saying one of the three stooges is the comic relief.

They see the alien skies and realise they’re not in Egypt any more, more they can’t figure out how to use the remote to get back to Earth because Earth’s symbol isn’t on the remote. They may also be entering the code wrong.

Lots of bickering, James being in favour of being cautious, Catherine in favour of charging in. Catherine making it abundantly clear she’s not going to obey James and pretty much setting the tone of her doing her own thing. They find the dead Nazi… and a Goa’uld. And Catherine smacks James for suggesting that maaaaaybe her elderly father is dead

(He’s not, he’s imprisoned by other Nazis who are busy taking pictures and occasionally talking in mix of German and English. So that was a useful segment. Writers, each episode is only 10 minutes long, you need to not waste time. We have more bickering)

She’s female, and what seems to be inevitable, the female Goa’uld is wearing what appear to be daisy dukes and some wisps of gold cloth. They fight her and though she’s decided to dispense with Goa’uld technology in favour of a big stick, she easily fights them all, knocking them escape. Luckily for them Catherine manages to accidentally hit a bracelet button activating a teleporter and removing the Goa’uld from the fight. Oh and James has a semi-freak out in the middle of it because he accidentally touches Catherine’s breasts

To which our intrepid explorers think they’ve found a magic stick.

They also run into a young human who is clearly afraid of them (as James proves by yelling “boo” of course) but trying to lead them somewhere. Which they duly ignore and decide to go somewhere else. Oh and they don’t understand a word he says and when Wasif starts to mention he may recognise the language, James and Catherine silence him. Because sensible like that

After managing to exchange names, they follow Kasuf to some tents and are quickly taken prisoner and tied up with lots and lots and lots of bickering. Poor Wasif, stuck with the pretty bickering people.

Wasif manages to free them so they can bicker some more and bicker some more and then accidentally stab Wasif.

Oh Wasif, these pretty people are dangerous for you.
