The Returned, season 1, Episode 5: Tony & Adam

Time for a flashback to 7 years ago when Tony and Adam’s mother was still alive and is angry at Tony because “he got out.” It’s apparent they’re worried about Adam being out there, “hunting”. Their mother tells Tony that Adam is sick – and he’s not going to get better

Tony drives through the night to find his brother- and finds him attacking Julie in the tunnel-of-horror. Tony hits Adam, but it’s too late to stop the attack and people are coming (this death-tunnel-of-doom is popular) so he leaves her to drag his brother out,

Tony buries his brother. Alive – until he starts screaming then he kills him.

Which is probably why Tony wasn’t so thrilled to see his brother back from the dead – and is now exactly comfortable having dinner with him or with Adam’s plan to go into town. Adam tries to play ignorant about what his brother means when he describes him as “sick”.

Tony continues to worry about his brother when he sees him bloodstained after killing a deer – asking if Lucy “was a deer.” He tries to question Adam about Lucy but Adam plays ignorant until he realises it was his brother who killed him to try and stop him – and their mother agreed. Tony calls it a mistake that doesn’t matter any more – and Adam hits him. Tony begs Adam’s forgiveness

In the hospital, Julie emotionally checks up on Lucy who is on life support.

To Nikki having happy fun sexy time with another woman when her boss calls to interrupt things. Worst. Boss. Ever. He wants to talk about a missing person case which is just rude when she has a very unmissing person right there in the bed with her. The missing person case being Victor and his update is that 4 years ago another boy of the same height, hair and eye colour was seen who disappeared. Which would be relevant if Victor’s height, hair and eye colour were not so very generic. Her boss also decides to be super creepy and “funny” asking what Nikki and her girlfriend are wearing. Oh Returned why ruin it? Nikki goes to work

Over to the family drama of Rowan and Tommy and Tommy shifting the topic to Simon rather than the fact he’s a creepy stalker. He’s also decided that undead Simon is dangerous because REASONS (unlike the guy who illicitly records you, he’s totally safe, honest).

To her job tourguiding kiddies around and dropping some big hints that, at some point in the past, the great big dam over the town burst while being distracted by Simon.

Resurrection, Season 2, Episode 6: Afflictions

We open with a little girl who has apparently not just survived a plane crash but has managed not to spill her soda while doing so. She looks quite irked by the whole experience though

Then flash to the… present? Maybe? Where Bellamy’s name-less boss stops staring into space and holding a can of the same soda to answer a call from Bellamy. He’s really nastily sick and, to prove the point, passes out on the phone. (Side note – do not try this when trying to pull a sicky at work – it never ever ends well)

Bellamy wakes up in spooky hospital ward with a government doctor ready to make with the sedatives. Bellamy says no to sedatives and yes to information and the doctor runs down some info on the virus – brought back with the Returned and only they are susceptible. They can treat it, but they can’t cure it. Bellamy demands to see Lady Nameless (yes, until she gets a name this is her new moniker). Lady Nameless isn’t especially thrilled with Bellamy being awkward when they saved his life, but fills in some of the virus information including mortality rates and disappearance rates. We also learn Lady Nameless’s job – she’s a statistician with a reputation for being able to predict the unpredictable.

While talking to him she recognises the moon-shaped birthmark on his neck, and connects it to the big cliffhanger in the last season (ABOUT TIME!)

Later, Bellamy decides to do more fact finding so knocks out a guard/orderly and goes snooping. He finds Lady Nameless’s office – and she has a name! Angela Forrester! Awww, I didn’t get nearly as much use out of “Lady Nameless” as I wanted. Inside is a whiteboard covered in sciency-mathy-stuff, a cork board covered in clippings plane crashes – and his own file that notes he is a Double Returned; that he was originally Robert Thompson, a baby who was born and died in 1934.

He confronts Angela and she talks him through his history and she confirms that all the Returned were born in Arcadia. He asks after his birth parents and she mentions the Thompsons, Returned who he has already met – unfortunately both his parents have died/disappeared from the virus, only his sister Jenny (a child though technically his big sister) is left. He gets to see her, to comfort her and promise to look after her.

Bellamy is still suspicious so hides his phone in the centre. The send him back to Arcadia with medication – only 10 a day supply. In case we missed it, Bellamy asks about Angela’s interest in all the plane crashes which she quietly avoids answering. She also adds her skills at prediction and how she is show she will be able to predict the Return.

Bellamy is taken back to Arcadia unconscious.

To Maggie who is having major issues with her disappearing mother (and her hair - which may be more traumatic) she’s also super not happy that Bellamy’s nowhere to be found (because dying. Which used to be a great excuse before the Returned ruined it). Elaine is there to provide comfort and declare that, yes, evil Margaret was there when Barbara disappeared.

The Women of Resurrection

Unlike many shows on television, Resurrection actually has a pretty large selection of female characters.  Before you clap your hands for inclusion though, it’s worth looking at exactly what kind of characters we have been given. Though we have gotten to know all of the women in the season and a half that Resurrection has been on the air, they have never been allowed to move beyond very specific tropes: self sacrificing, victim, slut and or course control freak. They are essentially cardboard cut outs rather than full fleshed out characters like the men. Men are allowed to go on an emotional journey whereas the women are expected to perform their gender in a very specific manner and shamed if they dare step outside of it momentarily.

The most glaring example of this is Barbara. Barbara drowned on the same day that Jacob did. The difference is that Jacob slipped trying to save Barbara’s life and Barbara was down at the river because she was having an affair with Sam. From the very beginning, it’s clear that though Fred has mourned the loss of Barbara these past thirty years, he was anything but a good husband to her. Barbara was lonely and out of her depth and Fred was controlling and cruel.

Almost from the moment of Barbara’s return, she has been slut shamed. How dare she cheat on Fred! No one bothered to realise that marriage is difficult in the best of circumstances and that outside of the people involved, no one really knows what happens inside a marriage. It quickly became far easier for Maggie, Lucille, Margaret and even Fred himself to shame Barbara for her decisions, while neglecting to examine the various ways in which Fred let Barbara down.

During the now infamous dinner from hell, Lucille not only actively blames Barbara for Jacob’s death but unequivocally states that Jacob is dead because Barbara wanted to “screw Sam” and had Barbara stopped the affair when she was advised to do so, Jacob would have lived. Margaret has not minced words when it comes to her descriptions of Barbara either. When Margaret sees Barbara dressed in shorts and a pullover, Barbara actually describes this outfit as “next to nothing”, to emphasise to Maggie that her mother is a no good whore. For her part, Maggie blames Barbara for her not having the perfect family reunion because Barbara chose to return to Sam, who was neither neglectful or emotionally abusive like Fred.

Barbara is shamed for making her own sexual choices and made to look like the Scarlet Woman. I am in fact shocked that they didn’t demand she walk around with the letter A sewn to her clothing, while she is followed by a child banging a drum so that the passerbies know they are in the presence of a slut. In the end not only is Barbara attacked everywhere she goes, she is convinced to give up her life by Margaret.  Margaret cites Barbara's poor decisions as the primary reason that Barbara should give up on life. Instead of fighting, Barbara, who by that point is so full of shame, simply gives in and disappears.  

What crime did Barbara commit that she didn’t deserve to live? Why the evil of adultery of course and having the temerity to reduce Margaret’s control on Fred. Margaret made it absolutely clear that had always had a tumultuous relationship with Fred but when Barbara arrived on the scene she lost all semblance of control over her son. As much as Margaret didn’t want to see Fred get hurt again, Barbara’s biggest crime was the potential influence she could have had over Fred again. It’s almost incestuous the way that Barbara seeks control of who her son is dating. Barbara was Margaret’s competition and Margaret simply could not handle that.

Another family in conflict due to the Returned is the Hale family. Pastor Tom is caught in a difficult situation between his wife, Janine and his Returned pregnant ex-girlfriend Rachel. We see a lot of Tom’s conflict over this, we see his struggle with both them and with his church and even with his childhood friend Jacob. Tom is in a difficult situation and we see a lot of that developed and on screen

Resurrection, Season 2, Episode 2: Echoes

Beginning at the Langston house and Jacob and his grandma – and Jacob realising how much older his parents are and what that might mean. His grandma reassures him that you can’t predict death and, besides, the dead have a habit of coming back round there. She also learns that the family’s factory is closed and has been for a long time.

She talks to Henry about it – he let the factory go after Jacob died, and she learns about her granddaughter, Dr. Maggie.

Agent Bellamy is still adjusting to being one of the Returned – being dead – but he tells Maggie he has been reassigned to the town to be in charge of the Returned, not mentioning that he’s actually been recruited as a spy (I suppose it amounts to the same thing). His new evil boss also calls to remind him of his role and that Sheriff Fred will totally co-operate.

Bellamy goes to see Fred (which is awkward) who reiterates that the government woman (who remains nameless) called him with lots of menace if he doesn’t co-operate. Bellamy gets an office. There’s lots of passive aggressive sniping from Fred before they get notice that there’s someone living in a shack in the woods. Fred and Bellamy head off with more passive aggressive pouting from Fred.

They head to the shack, fearing Caleb has returned (again) – so far they don’t find anyone but they plan to keep watch. Fred checks with Elaine but she is sure that Caleb isn’t coming back; he certainly hasn’t been in touch. There’s a lot of awkward between them since Fred got drunk and came on to her last episode

When Bellamy checks on Jacob he runs into Jacob’s grandmother, Margaret – and she feels like she knows him (Returned recognition thing?). Jacob is creepily collecting dead birds when Bellamy tries to see if Jacob has sensed Caleb around since he has in the past. He hasn’t – nor has he sensed anyone else when Bellamy asks to try and figure out if there’s anyone new around – there aren’t.

Jacob keeps checking his buried dead birds to see if they Return and his conversations with his mother are pretty morbid as he worries about his now elderly parents dying

To Pastor Tom’s house and Rachel wants to move out – staying with Tom with all of his wife’s things around is just so very very awkward, especially with her moving out and not talking to Tom. He’s all focused on the baby

But when he goes to the church his wife Jeanine drops by asking to collect things from the house – and finds that Tom has resigned while he figures out what he thinks especially since he can’t bring himself to preach the more “traditional” message the church demands. Jeanine suggests setting up his own, small church – since Tom doesn’t like crowds anyway

Resurrection, Season 2, Episode 1: Revelation

Bellamy wakes up, gasping for breath, in the middle of nowhere. He remembers running with Jason – and soldiers taken Jacob from him, hitting him in the process. He runs back to town and staggers to the Langston home. He tearfully tells them he couldn’t keep Jacob safe – and Jacob comes downstairs.

At breakfast he remembers only that he was locked up in an interrogation room, injected with something – then he woke up in the middle of nowhere. In Arcadia, all Returned with loved ones got to go home to them – the rest are still in government hands and Lucille thinks they’re being spied on. As an added bonus, the media is reporting the whole incident as a hoax so it has been well covered up. Bellamy is also missing a week of memories and has stabbing chest pains.

When Marty tries to call his boss he gets a strange woman who is eager to learn where he is – he hangs up on her which is wise but likely pointless.

Rachel, who has Returned twice, is still pregnant and she and Tom see Dr. Maggie Langston for ultrasound; Tom has “claimed” her so she wouldn’t be taken away. Maggie is also not speaking to her dad the Sheriff which doesn’t surprise me at all – and she and Bellamy have a happy/shocked reunion. She checks him over and finds no health complaints. She does offer her couch to sleep on since he no longer has his room at the inn and he intends to keep investigating this mysterious government agency.

He stays with her to increase the whole “will-they-won’t-they” that may be sneaking in,  a great scene on how the Returned have affected them and Bellamy shares the full story of the case we’ve seen flashbacks – a boy was a witness in a human trafficking case who was killed. More revelations are interrupted by Bellamy’s boss, Toni, calling with a cryptic request to meet him so she can give him some answers.

Sheriff Langston is getting flak from the people of Arcadia for calling in the army (whether because of the hoax story that made them look like fools or the hassle or the removal of the Returned – hey there’s lot of reasons to be pissed at this guy). He stomps around like a bad tempered child on the discovery that his actions have consequences. He also hits the bottle. He tries stalking his daughter and “apologising” for something completely different rather than admitting his wife and nephew are back – enraging Maggie. When Bellamy appears, the fool Sherriff even tries to attack him (alas, Maggie is sensible enough to stop it) and Bellamy just pins Fred before he hurts himself.

Resurrection Season One, Episode Eight

This episode begins in the morgue with Rachel looking down on her body with Tom, Bellamy and Fred. Fred wonders how this is possible and Rachel reports that she feels the same and that the baby is probably alright. Fred says that he has seen several Returned and that the station has been flooded with calls.  Tom excuses himself after receiving a call that more Returned are gathering at the church. Rachel decides to accompany Tom, not wanting to be alone. Bellamy and Fred speculate that there could be more than 100 Returned.

Maggie is in a state of awe looking at her mother and asks how long she has been back.  Barbara admits to being back for a week and when she takes a few steps towards Maggie, Maggie backs away.  Barbara admits to watching Maggie from a distance but says that she didn't approach Maggie because she didn't want to see Fred. Maggie becomes incensed and wonders if her mother stayed away because of Sam.  Maggie then questions who Sam is to her.  Maggie questions what kind of mother / person has a fling right after having a baby. That's a nice little bit of slut shaming there Resurrection. Barbara yells that Maggie doesn't know her, or how cruel Fred can be.  Personally, I'm already team Barbara.  Maggie tells Barbara to stop because Fred is her father. Though Barbara is Maggie's mother, Maggie was  raised by her Fred, so I suppose it instinctual to defend the only parent you have. Barbara points out again that Maggie wasn't there and that Maggie doesn't know how dark Fred can get.  Maggie tells Barbara that she is wrong and that she has no idea how much Fred loves her.  Maggie adds that Barbara needs to tell Fred that she is back. Maggie leaves demanding that Barbara tells Fred about Sam or she will.

Jenny's family is having dinner with the Langston's detailing how they died.  It seems that the Thompson's were out in the woods looking for Jenny's brother Robert. Lucille wonders if Robert came back somewhere else. They Thompson's say that Robert can be identified by a crescent shaped birth mark at the base of his neck.  Fred informs the Thompson's that his brother is the sheriff and promises that Fred will keep an eye out for Robert.

Bellamy arrives at the church to find it filled with people dressed in clothing from various eras.  Tom is trying to organize the Returned in the hopes of helping them connect to living family members. Tom tells Bellamy that the Returned just keep showing up and are starving and need some place to stay. Tom adds that most of the Returned don't have friends or family in Arcadia anymore and that is why they have all converged on the church. Helen marches into the church and Tom tries to intervene thinking that she is there to cause trouble but Helen marches right past him and embraces a woman named Eva.   This is yet another example of how attitudes change when this person who returns is a loved one.

Bellamy calls Toni to report that there are 100's of Returned now. Bellamy says that the people need help and that there is no keeping a lid on this anymore.  Toni says that this isn't in their purview, so Bellamy suggests that she make some calls and get out ahead of this thing. Bellamy wants to ensure the town gets humanitarian aid and points out that if they're not careful, this could go very badly.

When Fred returns home, he finds Barbara waiting for him. Fred embraces Barbara but she doesn't hold him back.  Barbara is quick to tell Fred that this is not what it seems and Fred answers that he already knows about the affair with Sam. Fred starts to beg saying that they have another chance and that he loves Barbara but she tells him that it's too late for that.  Barbara tells Fred that it's over and that when she came back, it was clearer than ever.  Barbara admits that she went straight to Sam when she got back and that Maggie found her. Barbara apologizes for not coming to see Fred.  Fred tells Barbara that it was a long time ago and that he has to accept her choice.  Barbara thanks Fred and walks away. Later, Fred sits and watches home movies of Barbara and Maggie. Fred took this far too easily given his reaction when he learned of Barbara's affair with Sam.

The next morning, Maggie and Eric make their way into the church.   Bellamy reports that they have counted over 75 Returned and that there are calls still coming into the sheriff's office. Eric asks where the Returned are coming from and Bellamy informs him that the proximity projection that Eric came up with does not work.  Bellamy adds that he called his boss for help and that hopefully they will get some aid soon.  Maggie and Eric sit to start interviewing the Returned when they hear a loud rumbling noise.  When they vacate the church, they find the military rolling in in humvees. General Stone gets out of a humvee and introduces himself saying that Toni sent him.

The soldiers are handing out food and supplies when Fred walks into the church.  Fred tells Maggie that he saw Barbara and that he got some closure on some things.  Fred adds that he respects Barbara's decision.  Maggie hugs Fred and then goes to talk to Col. Stone to coordinate the military and the police force. Fred asks what Stone has been told about the situation and Stone reveals that he heard there was a storm, and flooding which left a lot of people without power. Fred informs Stone that Bellamy has left out a few details. Fred then points at Rachel and says that he wants to show him something. Fred takes Stone to the morgue to see Rachel's body and says that the Returned do not die and are dangerous.  Fred claims that a Returned has already committed a robbery and a murder.  Yep, didn't I say from the very beginning that Fred is an asshole. Fred adds that the worst part is that people believe that their loved ones have returned but the Returned are in fact are deceiving the people Arcadia.  Fred tells Stone that they need to protect the living instead of the dead.

Resurrection, Season One, Episode Seven: Schemes of the Devil

Jacob is playing at the park with Jenny and when she asks if he has any other kids to play with, Jacob admits that he has no friends.

Bellamy, Maggie and Tom have gathered in Rachel's hotel room because no one has seen her since the incident at the church the day before. Maggie reminds Tom that Rachel has family out of town and when that is rejected, she suggests that Rachel could have disappeared like Caleb.  Bellamy wonders if Jacob could sense Maggie, since Jacob is the one who helped them track down Caleb.

Fred enters the local bar and meets with Henry for breakfast.  Henry brings up stopping by the old factory and wondering if it could be reopened.  Fred is quick to deny this as an option because he believes there is no bringing the factory back to life.  Henry says that he is feeling optimistic, so Fred questions if Fred really believes the returned boy is Jacob.    Henry admits that things have not been easy but when he heard about Caleb disappearing, he was terrified and realized that he could lose Jacob. This is what made Henry realise that Jacob has brought life into his home again.

Lucille is watching Jacob play with Jenny, when she gets a call from Bellamy telling her about Rachel.  Lucille agrees to meet Bellamy at the house and calls for Jacob to tell him it's time to leave.  Jacob doesn't want to leave, so Lucille has to assert herself several times.  Before he leaves, Jacob whispers something to Jenny. When Jacob walks over to Lucille, we see a Black woman walking perpendicular to Jenny.  Does this mean that Jenny is another returned child?

Back at the house, Bellamy asks Jacob if he has ever sensed Rachel the way he sensed Caleb.  When Jacob says no, Tom tells Jacob that he knew Jenny and that they were in math class together. Jacob again says that he doesn't know and Tom asks him to think a little harder.  Jacob starts to wring his hands, as Tom asks him repeatedly to help them.  Jacob stands and says that he is scared and doesn't want to but continues to wring his hands.

Rachel is now tied to a chair and she denies knowing Caleb or where he is. Rachel begs for food and water and Gary point out that they have already given her food and water and that she has given them nothing in return. Gary wants to know what Rachel is and where she came from because people don't appear out of nowhere after being dead for 12 years.  Gary adds that Jacob could sense Caleb and since Rachel is just like Jacob, she must be able to sense Caleb as well.  Gary's co-conspirator's ask for a moment.  They ask how much longer they are going to do this because their plan was to only scare Rachel.  Gary says that they are not letting Rachel go, so both Paul and Carl declare that they want out.  Gary reminds them that they helped kidnapped Rachel and so if they tell anyone, they will be just as culpable as him.  When they walk out the door, Rachel begs them to stay and not leave her with Gary.

Eric and Maggie are looking at Jacob's blood and Paul asks to look at Caleb's blood to see if it looks like Jacob's. When Maggie heads over to the fridge, she finds the vials which contained Caleb's blood to be empty.

Tom and Bellamy pull up to the church to see if Rachel is hiding there.  In the lot, they see Gary's truck and so ask Bob the gardener if he has seen Gary today.  Bob replies that he hasn't seen Gary since yesterday and that Gary's truck has been there all night.

Henry and Lucille put together a puzzle, as a clearly bored Jacob watches.  Jacob wants to go back to the park and play with Jenny because he promised her that he would return. Henry tries to encourage Jacob but Jacob is insistent that he wants to return to the park.  Lucille tells Jacob that he heard what Bellamy said and that it is best for him to stay home today. Jacob storms up the stairs saying that he is being punished and that he didn't do anything.  Lucille moves to follow but Henry stops her saying that an occasional temper tantrum is the right of every eight year old boy.  Lucille however points out that Jacob isn't like other eight year old boys. Henry assures Lucille that Jacob will come around.

Bellamy and Tom head to see Fred about Gary but Fred says that he doesn't understand why Gary would do something to Rachel.  Tom points out that Gary's truck is still at the church and  Belllamy adds that Gary was talking about the Returned like they aren't human. Fred points out that Gary has every right to be angry because of what Caleb did and suggests that Rachel might be embarrassed because of her pregnancy and left town. Out of the corner of his eye, Fred sees Carl making his way into the station.  Fred tells Bellamy and Tom that he isn't going to investigate until he has proof that something is wrong. Tom gets angry and says that he is done wasting his time arguing with someone who is ignorant.  Fred argues back that he is caught in the middle, so Bellamy promises to let Fred know if something comes up.

Carl is getting dressed in the locker room when Fred walks in to question him as to why he is late.  Carl lies and claims that his battery died. Fred slams Carl against the lockers and asks him what he did.

Tom and Bellamy make their way to see Polly Humphrey and ask if Gary is at home.  Polly admits that Gary is not at home and wonders if Gary will ever be back.  It turns out that Gary started drinking again and that when Gale got killed, it put Gary over the edge.  Bellamy assure Polly that he doesn't want Gary to hurt himself or anyone else and asks if Polly has any idea where Gary might be.  Polly again says that she doesn't know, so Bellamy asks if there is a place Gary goes when he wants to be alone.  Polly tells them about the cabin and Tom stands, promising to tell Polly if they find Gary.

Eric calls Maggie back into the lab to look at a sample of leukemia. Maggie wonders how Eric got a sample of leukemia but instead of answering her, Eric shows Maggie another slide.  The second slide actually shows that the cancer has been cured after being introduced to Jacob's white blood cells. Eric is excited and says that he needs to do more tests. Maggie again asks where Eric got the leukemia sample and Eric admits that he was diagnosed last year.  Eric says that he is booking a flight for Maryland tonight and tells Maggie that she should go with him.

At the Langstons, Lucille knocks on Jacob's door but doesn't get an answer.  Lucille says that she knows it is hard to understand why things are the way they are.  When Lucille doesn't get an answer again, she opens the door and finds the room empty.

Gary is drinking and Rachel promises not to say anything if he lets her go home.  Gary questions if  Rachel has a home and Rachel points out that Arcadia is her home, just like Gary. Unfortunately for Rachel, Gary is quick to tell her that she is nothing like him.  Gary says it's time to find out what Rachel is and pulls out a long knife and adds, it's time to find out if Rachel bleeds.  Rachel asks Gary if he is sure he wants to do that because she might be the devil and questions if knives can hurt her.  Rachel points out that she is already dead, so Gary grabs her and demands to know what she is.  Rachel promises to hunt Gary down and show up in his nightmares.  The two are interrupted by a loud knock at the door.

Resurrection, Season One, Episode Six: Home

Fred repeatedly watches the video of Caleb disappearing.  At the moment of disappearance, the video turns to snow.  Clearly, Fred is looking for something.

Bellamy reports to Lucille and Henry that Caleb is missing now.  They are greatly concerned and Henry asks about looking for Caleb but Martin says that he doesn't believe there is any point.  Their conversation is interrupted by Jacob saying that he is ready for bed.  Lucille gets up to follow but suggests to Henry that they should sleep in Jacob's room that night.  Henry then talks to Martin about Lucille's grief after the first Jacob died and how at the time he feared that he has lost her for good.

Fred is now looking through the cell where Caleb was kept.  Carl interrupts Fred's search to say that there's nothing there but Frank is adamant that a good cop doesn't stop looking for clues. Carl tries to distract Fred by inviting him to play cards but is rebuffed and leaves.

Next, Fred heads to see Elaine to talk about her father's disappearance.  Elaine says that its no stranger than anything else that happened. Fred heads for the door but pauses to say that he has always thought of Elaine as a daughter and never meant to hurt her by the events of the past week. Elaine answers that she thinks that it's all for the best and Frank leaves with a smile.  Elaine turns to look at Caleb's urn and Ray enters the room. Rays that the man who returned wasn't Caleb and Elaine agrees.

Bellamy is now sitting down with Maggie and Rachel.  Rachel says that the moment she woke up, all she wanted to do was return home and this was strange because before she died, all she and Tom could talk about was getting out of Arcadia.  Martin hands over his card and he and Maggie leave. Martin is not pleased that he still doesn't have answers about what is going on. Maggie reveals that she called Eric Ward, an old professor of hers who works for the NIH.  Bellamy is shocked but Maggie suggests that the government might not be the enemy here.

Fred heads to the local watering hole and runs into Gary.  Fred suggests that Gary head home because he is upset. Gary will not be pacified and says that Caleb is the same as Jacob - a freak. Gary starts to yell and wants to know why Fred isn't searching for Caleb.   Fred again tells Gary that he needs to leave. Gary heads to the door and asks Frank if he is going to do his job, or let other people do it for him.

Bellamy and Maggie return to her office to find Eric Ward waiting for them bursting with excitement. Eric's idea is that the returned are cloned from a parallel universe.  Maggie questions the fact that they all have their memories and share the same symptoms. When Bellamy shows concern about how much Eric knows, Eric assures him that he is not there on behalf of the NIH and is there as a guest and a colleague. Eric explains that he has figured out that one can predict the latitude a Disappeared person will appear at based on how long they have been dead and asks to meet Jacob.

Tom heads to see Rachel to drop off groceries and tell her about Caleb's disappearance. When Tom looks up, he notices that Rachel is shaking.  Rachel tells Tom that when she drove off the bridge she didn't know and then extrapolates to admit that she is pregnant.

Tom is now sitting with Janine and tells her about Rachel's pregnancy.  Janine asks if Rachel is keeping the baby and Tom is shocked that Janine would advocate abortion.  Janine assures him that she is not suggesting anything and points out that Rachel was depressed.  Tom assures Janine that he didn't want this but Janine did point out that they both wanted a baby. Janine is upset that they have been trying to have a baby for three years and now Rachel, a woman who committed suicide is pregnant.  Tom assures Janine that he is committed to their marriage but has told Rachel that he will do what's right for the baby.  Janine tells Tom that he has turned her into an obligation and leaves the room.

Eric interviews Jacob, Henry and Lucille, as Bellamy and Maggie listen in.  He keeps it lighthearted until Jacob leaves the room to get a snack and asks the Langstons to go to  Bethesda with him. Eric says that right now, they only have the standard medical exams and that Bethesda has the best equipment in the country. Bellamy interjects that Eric wants to turn Jacob into a lab rat. Eric replies that this is about Jacob's health and well being and points out that things didn't end well for Caleb and that he wants to figure out what happened so that he can stop it.

Resurrection, Season One, Episode Five: Insomnia

Resurrection opens with Bellamy's dream sequence.  Lucille is playing the piano and Bellamy sits on the floor playing soldiers with Jacob.  We learn that Bellamy was an only child and that his parents died ten years ago. Bellamy never bothered to look for his biological parents.  Suddenly, armed men break in and take Jacob away while Martin is being restrained.  Suddenly the scene changes to a child being put into a car by authorities.  Bellamy awakes to find himself alone in bed.

The real Jacob asks Henry to check on his windows.  Henry assures Jacob that his uncle scared the kids away.  Jacob asks if Caleb was found in the factory and Henry replies that Caleb is in jail and that Jacob does't have to be afraid of him.  Jacob wonders if someone is going to take him away because he is different and Henry tries to assure him but Jacob is not convinced.

It seems that insomnia is contagious in this town.  Tom gets out of bed and Janine apologizes for "acting like one of the women." Tom assures Janine that she is not controlling or manipulative. Janine is worried that asking Rachel to leave will become between them.  Tom promises that it won't and starts to head downstairs, when Janine asks where Rachel went.  Tom replies that Rachel is in Tennessee.

Caleb is in jail and is being visited by Bellamy.  Bellamy points out that Caleb had a second chance at life and used it to put a man in the hospital, murder another and rob a bank. Bellamy asks why and Caleb claims to have a different perspective on life and death.  Bellamy wants to know why Caleb is lying about what he went through.  Caleb waxes philosophical about how people go through life scared of death and that he now believes that there is no life or death, just the present.  Caleb wonders why the question is so important to Bellamy.  We get a flash to a crime scene where a woman wails.  Bellamy leaves.

Bellamy heads to  see Fred.  Fred reveals he got a message from the FBI and that they will be there in 48 hours.  Fred asks Bellamy to call in favors because he does't want the FBI in town. Bellamy suggests that they find the money, so that the FBI will have nothing to investigate.  Fred is afraid that if they start looking into Caleb, the FBI will look into Jacob.  Bellamy says that they have to make sure that this doesn't happen.

The police are searching Elaine's house while she sits on the couch spaced out.  Maggie pops in and starts to pick up the books on the floor but Elaine says that there is no point in cleaning until the police are gone. Elaine plays a recording of her boss calling to fire her and says that she is fantastic.  They discuss the fact that Maggie did't reveal that Caleb was being investigated.  Elaine believes that she was kept in the dark because Maggie sees herself as put together and Elaine as a child.  Maggie brings up the different circumstances that they had to face and says that Elaine had to grow up fast and that she admires her.  Elaine cries that she cannot do this alone and Maggie tells her that she is stronger than she realizes and is not alone.

Tom pulls up to a hotel and grabs things from the back of the car.  He knocks on Rachel's door.  They hug awkwardly and Rachel thanks him for putting her up.  Tom gives Rachel some clean clothing and food and Rachel sits experiencing a dizzy spell.  Tom realises that Rachel has a fever and Rachel says that she hasn't felt well since coming back.  Tom wants to take Rachel to see Maggie and Rachel brings up Janine but Tom relays that Janine believes he is helping someone in need.

Fred and Bellamy head to see Caleb and Fred informs Caleb that the FBI is coming to town, which means that Caleb will spend what's left of his days in a secret lab.  Caleb says that he is not afraid and Fred tells Caleb that he can help himself by pleading guilty and telling them where the money is.  Caleb snarks about a lawyer and Bellamy replies that dead men don't get lawyers.  Caleb asks about Elaine and Fred informs him that she hasn't visited but the police have already searched the house looking for the money. Bellamy tells Caleb that he has put Elaine through enough. Caleb asks to talk to Elaine and points out that the FBI will be interested in Jacob as well. When Fred tries to claim not to care about Jacob, Caleb points out that Bellamy does. We get a flash to the little boy from earlier and Bellamy dropping him off.  Caleb asks Fred if his wife really loved him, as Fred heads out of the cell. Fred attacks Caleb and tells him that he bleeds like everyone else. As Bellamy and Fred walk away, Caleb calls out more are coming, indeed, more than they can imagine.

Lucille works on her garden and Henry heads out to chat. Henry says that the bedroom is to quiet without Lucille in bed next to him. Henry says that he has been thinking about the Aldon's, former neighbors who also lost a child. Henry adds that they never talked to the Aldon's about the loss of their child though they had so much in common. Lucille replies that Henry was scared. Henry says that he knows he is hurting Jacob and that he wants to let the Jacob they lost go.  Lucille instructs Henry that he has to let himself feel, before returning to the house.

Resurrection, Season 1, Episode 4: Us Against the World

Caleb adds further credence to the fact that the Resurrected never sleep by doing DIY well into the night. Elaine comes out and they have a wonderful father-daughter bonding moment which more than suggests that as he gets more evil, poor Elaine is going to be his defender.

Martin, Maggie and the-always-unpleasant-Fred (who is, to no-one’s surprise, unpleasant) examine the body Martin found; blunt force trauma is the cause of death. Martin tells Fred his theory – Caleb robbed an armoured car way back in the past and buried the money at his hunting shack (where Martin and Maggie found the mask), having a heart attack and dying in the exertion. The dead man, Dale Getheard, found Caleb dead and helped himself to the money. The newly resurrected Caleb dug a hundred holes looking for his money before tracking Dale down and… expressing his disappointment. This exposition has been brought to you by the Investigators-With-Uncannily-Accurate-Theories-Trope. Martin adds that he saw Caleb yesterday washing a hammer. I’m not a very handy person, but I get the impression that washing hammers is not something one commonly does. Unless it has blood and brain matter all over it, anyway. Because that’s just not hygienic.

Fred agrees to talk to him but both he and Maggie have doubts – Caleb’s not a pleasant person but murder’s a bit of a leap but Martin raises the possibility that being zombied has affected him.

Pastor Tom is having further angst from newest resurrected, Rachel, newly arrived from a cornfield in New York. She’s been dead 12 years and seems quite devastated that he’s married. Rachel is also a suicide. She asks him not to tell anyone and he agrees – except his wife

Which means first he has to tell his wife that he loved another woman before meeting her and that woman killed herself. Which is a big reveal in itself – but adding she’s back and stayed the night really beats that. His wife, Janine, isn’t 100% happy with this even as Tom insists he’s a different person from the man he was 12 years ago. She wants rid of her.

It has to be said, playing hostess to your husband’s previously-unknown zombie ex is going to put a strain on most marriages.

It’s a sleepless night for just about everyone in the Langston household, made worse by kids peeking in Jacob’s window to look at “the ghost boy” – lots of drama and minor epileptic seizures. Lots of conflicted angst from Henry. The next day they call in Maggie to give him a check up and Lucille brings up some other worries – Jacob isn’t sleeping at all and he is eating constantly.

Henry tries to make his peace with Lucille about the rather appalling thing he said to her last episode; but she’s not just taking an apology as sufficient. She tells Henry he needs to let go – it’s not a sign of not loving him, it’s healthy grieving. Henry’s also still not ready to accept Jacob.

Resurrection: Season 1, Episode 3: Two Rivers

This episode opens with a flashback to Jacob lying in his coffin and a young Henry looking down at him.  In the present, Henry is watching as Lucille and Jacob play catch together. Jacob tels Lucille to throw it harder and she accidentally throws it over his head.  They notice Henry when he drops a tool and injures his arm. Henry says that he is fine and closes the door.

Maggie and Martin stand over Jacob's exhumed casket and he asks her thoughts.  Maggie says that she has no idea, so Martin reminds her that she said finding Jacob's remains inside the coffin would make sense to her.  Maggie replies that she thought it would.  Martin notes that the shirt looks like the one Jacob woke up wearing in China and Maggie comments that it's like a carbon copy was made. Maggie then looks at her mother's tomb but doesn't comment.  Martin cuts the tag out of the shirt Jacob was buried in and then later, compares it to the shirt Jacob was found in and finds it to be an exact match.

Jacob asks what was in the coffin and if he was in there.  Martin asks Jacob how he could  be in the coffin, when he is there now.  Martin then deftly changes the conversation to Jacob's throwing arm and suggests they go out back and throw the ball around.  Jacob asks if he is like Caleb, who told him to lie.  Jacob reveals that he had a dream about Caleb turning to dust and that he was scared.  Martin tells Jacob that if Caleb comes near him again that Jacob is to either tell him, or his mother.  Lucile calls out that it is snack time and they do a fist pound and part ways.

Caleb is washing the blood off of his hammer when Martin walks in.  Martin says that he has questions for Caleb and they head into the house.  Caleb pulls beer out of the fridge as Martin says that he looked up Caleb.  It seems that in his former life, Caleb was a drifter, with not much in terms of employment. Martin lists Caleb's three arrests and Caleb claims to be a different man now.  Martin says that people like Caleb don't change and Caleb calls this pessimistic. Caleb asserts that everyone has made mistakes.  Martin says that he doesn't know why Caleb is lying, or hiding what happened to him 13 year ago but promises Caleb that he will look under every last stone until he finds out.  Caleb says that dying isn't something he is eager to talk about because there is a lot of pain and then nothing and no sense of one's body or time. Caleb says that he could see his whole life backwards and forwards and felt a sense of peace and maybe some music or something. Caleb starts to laugh and says that this is the sort of story that Martin wants him to tell.  Martin questions why Caleb told Jacob to lie and Caleb says that he knows what's going to happen and that Martin is going to poke and prod Jacob, until Jacob tells Martin what he wants to hear. Martin asserts that he is only there to protect Jacob and Caleb replies that they have something in common because he doesn't know how he came back but he knows why.  Caleb asserts that he is there to protect his family no matter what the cost. Caleb adds that things aren't going to end well for Jacob. Martin stands and tells Caleb that if he goes near Jacob again that it won't end well for him before leaving.

Henry is at the doctor getting his hand checked by Maggie.  Maggie says that she wants an X-ray and Henry wonders if this is really necessary. Henry finally works up the courage to ask if Jacob was in the casket and Maggie says that they found his remains and that everything was normal.  Maggie adds that she is sorry he was put through that.  Henry gets up saying that he is sorry he troubled her before leaving.  Before Henry can get to the door, he runs into Martin and says that he hopes it was worth it before leaving the building.  Martin asks Maggie if she alright and Maggie shrugs and asks what's up.  Martin reveals that he spoke to Caleb and believes he is hiding something.  Maggie confirms getting the same impression. Martin asks Maggie what she remembers about the circumstances of Caleb's death.  Maggie talks about Elena being in shock after her father died and that Caleb had brought into the hospital from his hunting shack D.O.A. Martin asks where the shack is and Maggie asks him if he wants to go.

Ray is staring out the window and we can hear the sound of something being hammered.  Elaine enters and asks if their father is still working on the porch.  Ray answers since early this morning.  When Elaine opens the fridge, she finds it empty and Ray says that Caleb ate all of the food.  Elaine does not believe it and Ray swears that it wasn't him. Elaine asks if she writes a shopping list, if Ray will go today. Caleb enters and says that the porch is too much work and that they might have to hire somebody.  Elaine replies that they cannot because she is two months late on the mortgage. Caleb is shocked because he thought the house was paid off.  Elaine explains that the roof caved in three years ago and she had to take out a second mortgage. Elaine says that she has twenty-five dollars for food and asks if someone will please go shopping.  Caleb volunteers himself and Ray but Ray says that Caleb doesn't belong here.  Caleb asks what Ray means but Ray just leaves the room.  Elaine says that she has to go and that they will grill tonight and finish catching up.

Jacob is creating something for kids in a hospital and Tom stops by for a chat.  When Tom heads back to the chapel, he is approached by a parishioner, who is concerned that Lucille might need help.  When Tom replies that Lucille is fine, the parishioner comments that Lucille believes that Jacob is her dead son. Tom says that he doesn't know what is happening and is willing to trust that God will show them the way. The parishioner asks Tom if he is sure that God is the one behind this before leaving.

Maggie and Martin are hiking up to the cabin and she snarks about his clothing choice.  Martin explains that he didn't expect to stay in Arcadia as long as he has.  Martin says that humans build cities to protect themselves from nature.  Maggie stops and points out that this is where her mother and Jacob died.  Maggie adds that she kept hoping that being there would bring her closer to her mother or give her answers.

Resurrection, Season One, Episode Two: Unearth

Resurrection opens with Jacob walking through a graveyard. He pauses when he gets to the Langston tomb. He sees a vision of Caleb, who turns into dust before his eyes and when Jacob looks down at his hand, it begins to turn into dust.  This wakes Jacob and he is comforted by his mother Lucille.  Lucille comforts him and says that he is dreaming.

Elaine is still in shock that her father is alive and front of her. Maggie steps forward and introduces Martin, who asks what he can remember.  Caleb explains that he thought he had amnesia and doesn't remember. Caleb says that the last thing he remembers is driving his truck and passing out, then waking up in an alleyway in Portland three days ago.  Maggie questions if Caleb remembers having a heart attack and Caleb says no. Martin then informs Caleb that he died. A confused Caleb wonders what they are talking about and Maggie says that he was found by Dale at his hunting lodge.  Caleb calls this crazy and adds that Dale must have found someone else. Caleb grabs his head and asks if they have to do this now and Elaine is quick to say that this can wait.  Maggie asks that Elaine bring Caleb by her office the next day, before she and Martin head outside.  Martin asks Maggie if they are wrong about Caleb being cremated and if  it is possible that Caleb's story is true.  Maggie says that she saw his body before he was cremated and even more confusing, Caleb hasn't aged a day. Martin replies that now there are two who have returned. Martin questions why Jacob remembers dying and Caleb doesn't.  Ray joins them on the porch and declares that Caleb is not his father.

The next day, Jacob gets out of the shower and Lucille dries him off and brushes his hair, as Henry watches briefly before leaving.  Jacob notices his father then tells Lucille that he can brush his own hair. Lucille says that it's time to get him something different to wear and Jacob asks where his things are.  Lucille tells him to wait right there and that she will be right back.  Lucille opens a box which contains memorabilia from when Jacob was first alive. Jacob appears behind her in the doorway and Lucille announces that they are going shopping.

Martin is on the phone with Tony and he begs to keep what is going on under wraps. Martin is worried that the government will demand that Jacob be scooped up and subjected to medical testing. Tony suggests that this might need to be done. Martin is adamant that separating the family would not be right and that it would block the truth from coming out.

Maggie heads to see Fred with a coffee in hand.  Fred says that it's nice of Maggie to visit the old man and explains the mess in his house by claiming to have had friends over.  Maggie says that she is jut checking on him to make sure he is fine.  Maggie brings up what Jacob said about a man being at the river.  Fred immediately questions Jacob's identity and tells her not to allow other people to fill her head with stories about her mother.  Maggie says that Jacob is real and so is Caleb Richards.

Maggie then arrives at her office and finds Martin waiting for her.  Martin says that he is trying to figure out what is happening here an needs an ally. Martin says that there is no way to test Caleb's ashes from the urn but points out that Jacob's remains from the tomb can be tested.  Maggie asks what happens if there is nothing inside and Martin jokes that he needs to get the hell out of town before the dead all rise.  Maggie then explains that her mother is in the tomb as well and Martin says that he doesn't need her permission but is asking out of respect.  Maggie asserts that her family should be asked and that she wants to be there.

Lucille has taken Jacob to a soccer field to play with the other kids. He runs around until a whisper campaign starts to happen among the other mothers. One by one, parents calls their kids off the field, as a helpless Lucille watches.  In the end, Jacob is the only child remaining.  Clearly, the town is spooked by his return from the dead.

Caleb is eating breakfast as Elaine watches.  Caleb looks at the urn and questions whether Elaine believes he is in there.  Elaine says no and Caleb points out that he is pretty hungry for a dead man. Elaine sits and says that they have so much to catch up on.  Caleb admits to not always being the greatest father and that when life gives you a second chance, you have to take it.  Caleb grabs Elaine's hand saying that he is going to make this count. Elaine replies that she never thought she would hear those words.

Resurrection, Season One, Episode One: Resurrection

The pilot opens with a little boy who appears to be dead floating in a rice field.  He sits up suddenly grasping for breath.  In the distance, there is a bison, which  looks incongruous given the setting. He stands and starts walking and makes his way to a dirt road, which leads him to what looks like a makeshift market. The market is filled with Chinese people who try and talk to him but the boy does not understand. The boy suddenly collapses and the people surround him.

Martin bounce a tennis ball against the wall of his office door and accidentally breaks a framed photograph then Dr. Catherine Willis walks in.  In a pause for a geek moment, fans of Teen Wolf will recognize the good doctor as Tamlyn Tomita, who plays Mrs. Yukimura.  Catherine comments about another love affair ending for Martin and he replies that she wanted someone with more ambition.  Catherine clarifies and says money. Catherine asks for Kessler and Martin points out that normal people don't work on Sundays.  It seems that Catherine has a subject over at the airport who needs a ride and Martin agrees to do it.  Catherine points out that it's a child but Martin is fine with this.

At the airport, the boy the child from the rice fields waits watching the planes come in. In the background we hear that the child was found in China with no idea or passport. The attache tells Martin that the kid must be traumatized because he hasn't spoken a word.  The attache suggests that something violent must have happened to him. The attache says that the name Jacob is written on the inside of his shirt and that he appears to be American but there are no missing person's cases which match him.   Martin wonders if the child has parents who care for him. The attache reports that they checked visas going into China for a year and there is no record of the boy.

Martin introduces himself to Jacob but he still does not say a word.  Martin asks if Jacob is hungry but the child does not respond.  He takes Jacob for burgers and fries and tries to engage the child with games on his cell phone.  Martin hands over his phone and watches as Jason plays still not saying a word.  Martin asks how Jacob ended up in China and Jacob has the phone write the word Arcadia.  Martin takes the phone and asks if Jacob means Arcadia Missouri, and Jacob nods his head.  Back in the office, Martin calls the sheriff's office looking for information on Jacob and is informed that there are no missing kids named Jacob who belong there.  The sheriff is quick to hang up on Martin.

In the car, Martin calls adoption services and puts his gun in the glove box. The adoption services offices are closed.  Martin asks Jacob if he has a home and people who look after him and Jacob nods his head yes. Adoption Services finally answers and Martin disconnects the phone. Martin asks if he took Jacob to Arcadia, if he could show him the way to get to his house and Jacob nods yes.  Martin starts driving telling Jacob that he owes him.

Harold and his wife seem to spending a lazy Sunday working on word definitions.  Martin and Jacob pull into the Langston driveway and Martin tells him to stay in the car.  Harold answers the door and asks if he is the only Mr. Langston who lives there.  Martin asks if he is the father of Jacob and if his son went missing. Langston says that his son died 32 years ago.  Martin apologises saying that there has obviously been a mistake.  Jacob gets out of the car and runs and hugs Harold calling him daddy.  His wife comes to the door and his shocked to see Jacob.

Later, on the porch, Harold tells Martin that his son was eight when he died and fell into the river while playing down by the woods.  His Aunt Barbara tried to save him but neither made it.  Martin asks what all of this has to do with the boy inside and Harold concedes that he doesn't know.  In the house, Jacob is playing Donkey Kong on Martin's phone.  Jacob's mother approaches him slowly afraid to touch him.  Jacob tells Lucille that she looks different and she finally touches his face.  Mother and son hug and she cries.

Martin calls Catherine to report that he is in Missouri and that State had no idea what they were dealing with. Catherine says that he needs to bring the kid back before he is arrested for kidnapping because Jacob doesn't belong to the Langston's who are in their sixties. Martin says that they are suffering a mutual delusion or, but he ends the call when he sees an older photo of Jacob and his family. Sheriff  Fred Garland approaches the house in a rage and demands to know why Martin is harassing his brother's family.  Harold intervenes and begs his brother to listen to him.  Fred asks why a federal agency would issue a report for a boy who died 32 years ago and asks if it's a sick joke.  Jacob comes to the doorway and says, "hi uncle Fred."  Jacob then falls to the ground and has a seizure.
